    Controversial Heisman Finalist Goes Undrafted

    YouTube

Diego Pavia bet on himself. The NFL just didn’t bite. At least not yet.

The former Vanderbilt quarterback — a Heisman runner-up just a few months ago — went undrafted after all seven rounds came and went. That’s not just surprising. It’s rare. Pavia became the first Heisman finalist to hear his name not called since 2014.

And here’s the thing. This wasn’t some one-year wonder putting up empty numbers.

Pavia flat-out balled in 2025. We’re talking 3,539 passing yards, 29 touchdowns, just eight interceptions — plus another 862 yards and 10 scores on the ground. He led Vanderbilt to a 10-win season, turned the program into a national story, and walked away with SEC Offensive Player of the Year honors.

    So what happened?

Start with the obvious. Size. Pavia measured just under 5-foot-10 at the Senior Bowl, and the NFL still loves its quarterbacks tall. Add in questions about arm strength, system fit, and even some personality concerns, and suddenly a college superstar becomes a pro gamble.

Still, don’t write the ending just yet.

Pavia already flipped one program on its head. He went from junior college to New Mexico State to Vanderbilt, rewriting expectations at every stop.

Now comes the next chapter. Undrafted free agency. A camp invite. A shot.

And if you’ve followed his story at all, you already know — that might be exactly where he’s most dangerous.
