Miami’s Mark Fletcher Faces Backlash After Controversial Postgame Blow to Indiana Defender

The final whistle didn’t signal the end of the drama. Just moments after the College Football Playoff National Championship concluded with the Indiana Hoosiers taking a narrow 27-21 victory over the Miami Hurricanes, tensions escalated on the field at Hard Rock Stadium.

Miami running back Mark Fletcher was caught throwing punches at Indiana defensive lineman Tyrique Tucker in the chaos following the match. Standing 6-foot-2 and weighing 225 pounds, Fletcher was ready to escalate the confrontation before a staff member intervened and pulled the two apart. It’s worth noting that Tucker had a weight advantage of nearly 80 pounds.

The trigger for this altercation wasn’t clear immediately. However, the frustration was palpable. Miami had battled Indiana throughout the entire game but could never seize the advantage, as the Hoosiers secured a remarkable championship victory.

For Fletcher, this incident was especially disheartening. The South Florida native had one of his best showings in front of a national audience. He rushed for 112 yards on 17 carries, scored two touchdowns, and caught a pass for eight yards. His impressive 57-yard touchdown run in the third quarter pushed him past Ezekiel Elliott to claim the record for the most career rushing yards in CFP history.

Fletcher concluded the playoffs with 507 rushing yards across four games, marking a historic postseason that fell just short of ending with a championship.

While Indiana celebrated their victory, Miami remained in a distasteful silence.

Fletcher will return to the Hurricanes next season, but it’s clear that this night will stick with him for a long time.
